Welcome to Heart Work

Hi, I’m Leanne. I’m a Registered Social Worker with a Masters of Social Work degree. I’m a therapist, a university educator and a writer. I provide virtual support to people located anywhere in BC and in-person counselling in Victoria. I offer individual and couples counselling. I am currently accepting a small number of new clients.

In the nearly 20 years that I have been supporting individuals and families to manage complex needs, I’ve noticed that many people feel a sense of shame that they “couldn’t figure it out on their own.” The thing about life problems is that things are so complex that it can be challenging, if not impossible, to sort through everything on your own. It can be easy to start believing that our problems are insurmountable.

In our time together, I will listen closely to your story, acting as a witness to you as you undergo this life change. Using my clinical training, I’ll help you to create new meaning out of what is happening while ensuring that any solutions that are proposed emerge out of your core values, interests, desires and hopes. The therapy space is where you get to feel in control of your life again.

Some of the common challenges that I support people to manage include:

*anxiety and the wild ways that it convinces folks to doubt themselves

*answers to questions like “is my partner the person I’m meant to be with?” or “how do I fall in love again?”

*separation and divorce, blended families, and parent-child relationships

*love and relationships of all kinds between all genders

*working through huge life transitions, like going back to school, graduating from university, coping with “empty nest syndrome,” and changing careers

*navigating burnout such that it loosens the grey rock of indifference and locates meaning, creativity, joy and play in life again

Whatever your concern, you deserve to be heard. My work draws from years of teaching therapeutic techniques and theories to students at UVIC, my clinical practice in health care and behind the scenes work in social justice and advocacy projects. Whatever brings you to therapy doesn’t have to be a bad story anymore. Together, we’ll create something new and meaningful to you.

  • “Leanne encourages you to ask questions about the life we find ourselves in and the uncertainties we are up against. …We did so by cutting through the details in the connections we have with ourselves and others. The discoveries made within these connections often provided a chance to see love in diverse ways. Throughout my time learning from and alongside her, she created space for students to interact with the areas of themselves that haven’t received much attention. For myself, this looked like how I engage with perfectionism and a deep desire to be considered a ‘good person’. Confronting these areas feel and felt uncomfortable, however, Leanne highlighted the necessity for compassion and love for whatever might be revealed.” - K. Pulak, former student
